Soon after San Juan was incorporated as a town it became necessary to build a jail. The closest one was 20 miles away. When Hollister became the county seat, its jail was still seven miles away and was too far a trip for the more immediate needs of peacekeeping. Built c. 1880 the town calabozo was in use for 70 years. Then a more structurally safe but exact replica was moved to this site.
