Joe Zbrankik Blacksmith Shop

29

This Western False Front style building was built c. 1910 and served as a blacksmith shop for Joe Zbrankik. It has a wood framed structural system with a wood foundation. The exterior is covered by pressed metal at the front, and corrugated metal at the sides. A moderately pitched front gabled roof covered with metal sheets shelters the building and the eaves slightly overhang. The roof is obscured by a rectangular false front with a molded extended coping.

The main entry is a corrugated metal sliding door. There is a single fixed wood window with nine panes and a wood sill located at the facade. The building was constructed up to the property line. There are no visible alterations to the building.

J.A. Hudner also operated a blacksmith shop here. In the 1860’s when San Juan was busy with stagecoach lines and freight services to the New Idria Mine, there were half a dozen blacksmiths in town.
