Jasper Twitchell, a Mormon, arrived in San Juan Bautista c. 1848. A wheelwright and blacksmith, his shop was nearby at the corner of Third and Franklin. He developed the first commercial limestone kiln in San Juan Canyon. Today the building remains as a private residence.
