Cornaggia San Juan Bakery

31

The original 1850‘s Western False front General Merchandise store on this site was operated by the McMahon Brothers who sold the building to the Moore Brothers. There was initially a shed, well, fruit trees and grapevines alongside the original building.

The current cast concrete structure replaced it in the 1920’s. Brothers Reno and Silvio Cornaggia opened the Cornaggia Brother’s Bakery here in 1927. Reno and his family lived in the home next door until it burned down in 1937. Reno and his wife Rose Cornaggia moved the Bakery across the street to 319 Third Street in 1938.

Betsy’s Soup Tureen was housed in the building in the 1970’s, then Joan & Peter Lottermoser operated the Donkey Deli and Joan and Peter’s Restaurant in the building for over 30 years, and instituted an Oktoberfest celebration in San Juan Bautista held each Fall.

There is a canvas awning over the entrance and the main entry consists of a single wood and glass door flanked by sidelights and two single, fixed wood sash windows. An asphalt patio covers  the southeast side of the property that is bordered by a wood and lattice fence.

The building was recently renovated and transformed into the 18th Barrel Wine and Beer Tasting room. Today patrons enjoy the tasting room inside and entertainment in the patio area.
